Conservation Grazing at Arlington

Monty (left) and INXS (right) grazing with a friend at Arlington

Two year olds... but no temper tantrums!!

Many people often ask what has happened to last year’s youngstock? Well seven of the  ponies found a grazing placement at Arlington Court in North Devon

Kestra and Linzi went to see them in January to undertake a health check. All of these now gelded rising year olds were in fine health and enjoyed a little more human contact than their now normal daily visits by National Trust rangers, volunteers and dog walkers!

Particularly Monty and INXS (two Herd 23 boys from the Milton’s herds of Withypool and
Anstey Common) who were keen to show us how much they had grown up. Monty being determined that he was able to administer the wormers to the rest of the gang and also put their head collars on for us… quite the cheeky chap!

Older Ponies

During the winter months we have been keeping a close eye on some of our older residents. Kate, as many people will know, has been here at the Centre since we opened nearly 9 years ago. She is now 22 and although still keen to go out for a canter on the moor we feel that to keep her fit and healthy she requires a slightly more comfortable way of life. A comfy stable with veteran feed and plenty of hay each night does just the trick. She is looking fabulous and we are so pleased that with the extra attention from the dentist she is also keeping weight on through the winter better than ever, something the rest of the ridden ponies do not need to worry about!

Percy is another pony that we have kept a strictly close eye on over the last few months. After a bout of laminitis at a foster home in early spring he returned to the centre and seemed to lose condition going in to the winter months. After a check up from the vet and a comfy stable next to Kate each night, he too is now the picture of health.

Foals For Sale

We still have a few moor-bred foals for sale,
so please get in touch if you are interested
in buying one of these beautiful Exmoor ponies.

February Newsletter

We have had a great start to the year; one of our supporters has very kindly donated rubber matting for our large foal barn which has made a world of difference.  Then we won a public vote on Facebook and received a pallet full of haylage from Silvermoor Haylage; many thanks to all who voted for the Moorland Mousie Trust to be the lucky charity.

Over recent months MMT has been involved in bringing together a group of 14 Exmoor mares to be sent to the Czech Republic where they wish to create a breeding herd. These came from all over the UK but gathered to familiarise with each other in two groups, one here at EPC and one in with our chairman in Northumberland; they then travelled in luxury transport to their new home where they arrived safely at the end of January.

Winter snow has been a little inconvenient and meant extra work for staff but the younger ponies really enjoyed playing in it. Have a look on our Facebook page at the video and photos. If you took any great pics of ponies in the snow, we would love to see them and maybe they could be chosen for use on a calendar!

If you have unwanted but wearable clothes or shoes that you want to clear out to make more space, please bring them along to the Exmoor Pony Centre as we are trying to collect a ton (weight) of clothing to Clothes for Charity to raise £250 for the Trust.

Many thanks to all those who host collection tins for us, in particular Winsford Stores which has now closed but we wish the new Volunteer run shop in the pub every luck with their venture. If you think you could have a collection tin in your business to raise some money to support the Moorland Mousie Trust, please let us know  on 01398 323093.

We look forward to the Easter holidays when we will have an Easter Open Day on Sunday 5th April between 11 am and 3 pm and we are also excited that the dates for the Exmoor Pony Festival have been announced; it will take place from 8th to 16th August and more details will be available soon.
Finally if you would like to book up for a Taster Session or an Exmoor Experience Ride during the Easter holidays, please don’t leave it to the last minute as you risk disappointment; the number for all enquiries is 01398 323093 and if we are outside working with the ponies, the machine will take your message. Alternatively email us on

Thanks for your support.
